Why should you choose 2 categories for your podcast?

A few weeks ago, in Tips, we talked about the importance of choosing the right categories for your podcast. Because it is not just a formality that allows your show to be listed on listening platforms. It’s a real visibility lever for your podcast. 🚀

If choosing only 1 category already helps you to reference your podcast well on platforms. Choosing 2 is a real boost to the discoverability of your show. 🔥

I explain why in this article and how to choose them well! 👇

The importance of the category for a podcast

When you want to publish a podcast on listening platforms, you have to fill in metadata. I’m not telling you anything new: a podcast is not only composed of an audio file but also must be accompanied by an image (called cover or thumbnail), a title, a description, etc.

All these metadata allow you to reference your podcast well on listening platforms and thus record a lot of listens. 🎧 I invite you to read our article dedicated to the metadata of a podcast.

But let’s get back to the point.

Among the metadata you need to fill in on Ausha (or any other podcast host) before publishing your podcast, are the categories of your podcast. A category is what allows you to put your podcast in the right place.

This way, your future listeners will find you more easily by browsing the category that interests them. Imagine a podcast about cooking tucked away in sports… That wouldn’t be so great! 🤔

The difference between the “mother” and “child” categories

First of all, you should know that there are “mother” categories 👩‍🦳 and “child” categories 👧 (which we can also call “subcategory”).

There are 19 “mother” categories: Art, Business, Humor, Education, Novels and Short Stories, Government, Fitness and Health, History, Children and Family, Entertainment, Music, News, Religion and Spirituality, Science, Culture and Society, Sports, Technology, Criminology, Television and Film.

Within each of the “mothers” categories you will find several “children” categories. For example, within the “mother” category “Education” there are: Courses, Tutorials, Language Learning, Personal Development. Are you following me? 😁

(I let you browse the rest in the “Settings” tab of your Ausha manager).

How to choose the right categories?

In the end, you have 2 possible scenarios. ✌️

Scenario #1: Choose a “mother” category for your podcast

You can choose to have your podcast referenced in a “parent” category (for example: Business 💼). Your podcast will then be classified in a fairly global category that references hundreds of podcasts.

🟢 The advantage here is that listeners can browse the “Business” category a bit randomly and choose your podcast. 🥳

🔴 The downside on the other hand is that depending on the category you choose, you may have a LOT of competition. So your podcast can be drowned in a sea of shows that deal (more or less) with the same topic as you.

Scenario #2: Choose a “child” category for your podcast

You can also choose DIRECTLY to reference your podcast in a “child” category (for example: “Marketing”, which is part of the “parent” category Business). This way, your show is classified in a sub-category with less competition.

🟢 The huge advantage of this scenario is that by choosing a “child” category for your podcast in this way, you AUTOMATICALLY reference it in the “parent” category above. So your podcast is not only referenced in 1 group but in 2.

What a surprise : it’s scenario number 2 that we recommend! 🔥 By choosing a more specific “child” category, you emerge more effectively on listening platforms.

New: add a secondary category to your podcast!

Apple Podcasts and Spotify (the most popular listening platforms on the market today) offer to populate your podcast with 2 categories to further boost your SEO. 💪

And if you have followed this far, we advise you to apply scenario 2 again. Namely: choose each time (whether for the main category of your podcast or the secondary category) a “child” category. Thus your podcast will be referenced in 4 different groups!

And the icing on the cake: with Ausha, you can even follow your Apple Podcasts ranking in the 2 categories you’ve chosen. Just go to the “Statistics” tab of your manager and choose, on the top left, the ranking you want to analyze.

Where to modify the categories of your podcast on Ausha?

The great thing about Ausha is that you can add a secondary category or even edit your categories at any time. To do this, just go to the “Settings” tab of your show. 💜

If you change your categories, expect a small delay while the listening platforms take into account your change.
